Revolutionizing Children's Medicine Packaging: The Tissue Box

Sally Xu's innovative design eases children's fear of medicine while enhancing brand visibility

With an estimated 230 million children in China, the market for children's cold medicine is fiercely competitive. Designer Sally Xu has revolutionized the packaging of children's medicine with her Tissue Box design, aiming to reduce children's fear and resistance to taking medicine and alleviate parents' anxiety. This unique design not only stands out on the shelves but also subconsciously communicates the message of regaining health upon opening the medicine box.

The Tissue Box design is a unique approach to children's cold medicine packaging. The facade of the package features an image of a child wiping his/her nose. As the box is opened, the tissue paper is pulled out, revealing a healthy and happy child. This design not only reduces the fear and resistance of children to taking medicine but also relieves the anxiety of parents. The design conveys the idea of "taking medicine, you will restore your health".

The Tissue Box design is realized using coated paper for the outer box and polyester/aluminum-coated polyester/polyethylene medicine packaging with compounding film bag packaging for the inner bag. The technical specifications of the design are 88mmx88mmx170mm. The design was created by a team led by Sally Xu, including Chen Jiayi, He Ge, Cao Xue, Lin Huangtao, Wang Liang, Duan Hongli, and Xu Mengzhen.

The interaction with the Tissue Box design is simple yet impactful. The facade of the package is an image of a child who is wiping his nose. Then by lifting the snot paper, consumers will see a healthy and happy child. As the snot paper is pulled back, the image of a happy child appears little by little in front of the user, and the packaging box opens accordingly. This design subconsciously communicates to users that opening the medicine box will result in regaining health.

The Tissue Box design project started in January 2020 in Guangzhou and finished in June 2020 in Guangzhou. The design was based on in-depth analysis and research on the behavior characteristics of sick children and their parents, taking into account children's developmental psychology and the actual survey results of parents and children. The design of structure, color, opening method, interaction method, and other aspects of children’s medicine packaging has been carefully considered to benefit sick children and their parents.

The Tissue Box design has overcome the challenge of standing out in a highly competitive pharmaceutical market with dozens of manufacturers. The redesign of the drug packaging has not only improved its visibility on the shelves but also enhanced the user experience. The design was awarded Silver in A' Packaging Design Award in 2021, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
